Calendar

Cirrux Calendar is a web app at calendar.cirrux.info, and it comes with a CalDAV server, so it also works with calendar apps that speak that protocol: Apple Calendar on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, Thunderbird, and many others. This page covers how calendars and sharing work, including sharing with family or colleagues who are still on another provider.

Calendars in Cirrux

Create and manage calendars#

Every mailbox starts with a default calendar. You can create additional calendars per mailbox, for example a separate calendar for personal events, a project, or your family. In Cirrux Calendar, hover over your mailbox address in the sidebar, click the plus and choose Create calendar. You can also do this in Cirrux Mail under Settings → Mailboxes, on the mailbox’s Calendars tab.

Each calendar has its own color, name, and sharing settings. To move an event to another calendar, open it and pick a different calendar in the event popover.

Import existing events#

If you’re coming from another provider, export your calendars there as .ics files and upload them to Cirrux. See the ICS import guide for the export steps for each provider.

For Google specifically, you can also let Google Sync copy your Google calendars into Cirrux automatically. That sync is one way: changes you make in Cirrux are never written back to Google.

Sharing calendars

Share with other Cirrux users#

Open a calendar’s menu in the sidebar of Cirrux Calendar (or right-click it) and choose Manage sharing. Search for the person by name or email address and give them the Editor or Viewer role. Editors can add and change events, and events created by either of you appear on both sides right away, including on iPhone and iPad through the native Calendar app.

Someone in your own workspace gets the calendar straight away. A Cirrux user in another workspace gets an invitation by email and can accept or decline it on the Calendars tab of their mailbox settings in Cirrux Mail.

Colleagues in the same workspace can also look each other up with Find a colleague at the top of the sidebar and subscribe to each other’s default calendar, if the workspace allows it.

For a shared family calendar, the simplest setup is to put everyone in one workspace. See the Workspaces guide for how to add family members to your workspace.

Subscribe to someone else's calendar#

To add a calendar that someone publishes as a link (a sports club, public holidays, a colleague on another provider), hover over your mailbox address in the Cirrux Calendar sidebar, click the plus and choose Subscribe by URL. Paste the ICS or webcal link. Cirrux checks the feed for changes regularly. Subscribed calendars are read-only, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Sharing with Google: read-only only#

Two-way sharing between Cirrux and Google Calendar isn’t something cirrux.infontrols: Google only allows write access to its calendars from other Google accounts. That limitation affects every non-Google calendar provider, not just Cirrux:

  • Cirrux → Google works as a read-only subscription. Subscribe to your Cirrux calendar’s public iCal link in Google Calendar. Your events show up there, but Google users can’t edit them.
  • Google → Cirrux works the same way: add the Google calendar’s secret iCal address with Subscribe by URL in Cirrux to see its events without write access.

The only way to get bidirectional sharing between two people is to put them both on the same platform. If you want full read/write sharing of a family calendar, the practical path is to move everyone to Cirrux mailboxes.

Mobile and desktop setup

iPhone and iPad#

Add your Cirrux calendars to iOS by installing the cirrux.infonfiguration profile. In Cirrux Mail, go to Settings → Mailboxes, open the mailbox’s Passwords tab, click iOS set up on your computer and scan the QR code with your iPhone or iPad. Or open the same tab on the device and tap iOS configuration. The Install Profile on Mac guide covers the Mac, and the Setup guide lists the manual CalDAV settings.

Once installed, your Cirrux calendars show up in the native Calendar app alongside any iCloud or Google calendars. Events flow both ways for calendars you own, and read-only for calendars you’ve subscribed to via a URL.

Mac, Thunderbird, and other clients#

Any CalDAV-compatible client works. In Cirrux Mail, go to Settings → Mailboxes, open the mailbox’s Passwords tab and click New app password. Then point your client at api.cirrux.info with your email address as the username and the app password as the password. The Setup guide has all connection settings.

The Compatible apps page lists clients we’ve tested.

API and command line#

Reading what is on a calendar and creating, changing and deleting events is also available through the Calendar API and the Cirrux CLI, for scripts and integrations.
