Switch to Cirrux
Ready to make the switch? This guide will walk you through the process of transferring your email to Cirrux. The process is straightforward and typically takes just a few minutes to set up.
Before you start
We recommend using your own domain (like you@yourdomain.com) rather than a provider-specific email address. This gives you full control over your email and makes any future move much easier. If you don't have a domain yet, you can register one through any domain registrar.
Migration steps
Create your mailboxes
You get your first mailbox when you sign up. To add mailboxes for other people, open the admin app at admin.cirrux.info, go to Users and use Add member, which creates a mailbox for the new member. To give an existing member another mailbox, open that member and click Create mailbox.
Each mailbox has its own app passwords for connecting email clients.
Import your existing data
Go to Settings → Sync & Import in Cirrux Mail. What you can bring across depends on where you are coming from:
- Google: Google Sync imports your email, calendar events and contacts, and keeps checking for new data every hour.
- Any other provider with IMAP (Microsoft, Fastmail, iCloud, your own server): an IMAP import copies your email.
- Calendars and contacts from other providers: export them and upload the files with ICS file import (calendars) and VCF file import (contacts).
Imports run in the background and can take a while for a large mailbox. You'll get an email when the first full Google or IMAP import is complete. Files from Google Drive or OneDrive are not imported. Upload them to Cirrux Drive yourself.
Verify the import
Once the first import has completed, check that your emails, calendar events and contacts show up in Cirrux. Progress and recent runs are shown in Settings → Sync & Import.
Verify that everything looks correct before proceeding to the next step. You can keep using your current email provider while the import runs. Google Sync and IMAP import only read from your old account and never delete or change anything there.
Add your domain
Now it's time to add your domain to Cirrux. Go to Settings → Domains in Cirrux Mail (or Domains in the admin app at admin.cirrux.info) and click Add domain.
Cirrux will provide you with the DNS records you need to configure. See our Domains & DNS guide for details on each record.
Update your DNS settings
Log in to your domain registrar and update the DNS settings with the records provided by Cirrux. You'll typically need to add:
- MX records: route incoming email to Cirrux
- SPF record: authorizes Cirrux to send email on your behalf
- DKIM records: sign your outgoing email
- DMARC record: tells receiving servers what to do with mail that fails these checks
For the full list of DNS records and what each one does, see our Domains & DNS guide. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate, though they often take effect within minutes. We'll email you when we detect the DNS changes, and your domain will show as Active once the records are verified.
Configure your addresses
With your domain active, configure the email addresses for your mailboxes. Go to Settings → Mailboxes, open a mailbox and click Create address.
You can have multiple addresses pointing to the same mailbox. Use Make primary on an address to make it the default sending address.
Set up a catch-all (optional)
If you want to receive email sent to any address on your domain, you can configure a catch-all mailbox. This is useful for catching typos or receiving email to addresses you haven't explicitly created.
Open the domain in Settings → Domains, choose Configure catch all mailbox and select the mailbox that should receive it.
You're all set!
Once your domain is active and your addresses are configured, you're ready to use Cirrux as your email provider. New emails will arrive in Cirrux, and your imported history is available to search and reference.
If you came from Google and keep Google Sync connected, email that still arrives in your Google account is copied to Cirrux within the hour, so you don't need to set up forwarding. The same applies to calendar events and contacts. An IMAP import does not run on its own: run it again from Settings → Sync & Import, or set up forwarding at your old provider, to catch mail that arrives there later.
